eyrie is such a beautiful one. in the 1660s it was still spelled this way on the assumption it had derived from the middle english term for „egg“, ey. since then eyrie has gotten a makeover in some parts of the world, bought an a, got rid of the i griega, and became aerie, bearing more resemblance to old french aire, „nest“, medieval latin area, „nest of a bird of prey“. the english language has a funny predilection for gimmickry and altering appearances.
